A First Comparison of Simultaneous Sea Level Measurements from Envisat, GFO, Jason-1, and TOPEX/Poseidon

چکیده
The multiple altimeter missions have not only advanced our knowledge of ocean circulation, ice sheet topography, and global climate, but also improved the accuracy of altimetric measurements by cross-calibration and validation. In this paper, one year’s simultaneous maps of sea level anomaly (MSLA) data obtained from four altimeters, Envisat, Geosat Follow-On (GFO), Jason-1, and TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P), have been compiled for a preliminary comparison. First, the discrepancy in global geographical distribution of each product relative to the merged MSLA field is analyzed and its signal retrieval capability is discussed. Second, the space/time variability of each discrepancy in the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, and global ocean is studied. Third, each discrepancy as a function of latitude, longitude, and merged MSLA is presented. The results show that Jason-1 is the best singlemission for mapping large scale sea level variation, while T/P in its new orbit presents the poorest estimation of SLA due to the short period (from cycle 369 to 403) used to determine the mean profile. A clear understanding of each product discrepancy is necessary for a meaningful combination or merging of multi-altimeter data, optimal product selection, as well as for their assimilation into numerical models.

Impact of Microwave Radiometers on Sea Level Change Studies
Microwave radiometers form an integral part of satellite altimetry. The long-term stability of the radiometer measurements is as important to the accurate determination of sea level rise as is the long-term stability of the altimeter instrument. However, the radiometer stability has been largely taken for granted. Detailed long-term study of the brightness temperatures of ERS-1, ERS-2, TOPEX/Po...
متن کاملValidation and Applications of Near-real Time Altimetry Data for Operational Oceanography in Coastal and Shelf Seas
Near-real time altimetry products from ENVISAT RA2, Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon tandem mission are validated for the North Sea and Baltic Sea region to assess the feasibility of using the data for operational purposes. The coverage of the satellite data shows that all Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon observations in the Baltic Sea are currently discarded in the processing of the data. The spatial scal...
متن کاملSimultaneous Crossover Adjustment for Contemporary Altimeter Missions
Since some time several altimeter satellites are operating simultaneously (ENVISAT, Jason-1, ERS-2, GFO, TOPEX/Poseidon). The large number of nearly simultaneous crossover events are used to estimate in a common adjustment radial error components of all altimeter missions. A discrete representation is used for the radial error components by minimizing both, crossover differences and consecutive...
متن کاملAbsolute and Relative Calibration of Ers-2 with Applications to Envisat
Continuous monitoring of the range stability is a pre-requisite for sea-level rise and other demanding applications in satellite altimetry. Range stability may be investigated by either absolute or relative calibration techniques. In this study relative calibration is undertaken through intercomparison against TOPEX/Poseidon and absolute calibration undertaken in the vicinity of 8 tide gauges a...
متن کاملImproved description of the ocean mesoscale variability by combining four satellite altimeters
Data from four satellite altimeters are combined with the aim of improving the representation of the mesoscale variability in the Global Ocean. All missions [Jason-1, ERS-2/ENVISAT, Topex/Poseidon interleaved with Jason-1 and Geosat Follow-On] are cross-calibrated previously to produce weekly gridded maps. In areas of intense variability, the rms differences between a classical configuration of...
